Summary
Elevated relative humidity and temperatures favour the dissociation of formaldehyde in poorly ventilated rooms the walls of which are covered with urea-resin-bonded particleboard. Formaldehyde can accumulate in such quantities that reach or surpass the maximum working-place concentration. The determination of the capacity of formaldehyde dissociation can be accomplished best with an elevated temperature (≈70°C) and constant relative humidity (50%), whereby also the influence of the moisture content of the board has to be considered. The determination represents a comparatory examination and upon application of the method described, brings relative indices. Upon the manufacture of particleboard its capacity of formaldehyde dissociation can be influenced to a certain extent by the kind of resin used (types with little odor), by the pressing time, the content of hardener, the ammonia added, and the eventual use of urea. The unpleasant odors of formaldehyde can be reduced by prolonged storage. It can be further diminished by formaldehyde-binding coatings applied to the finished board.
