Summary
The quantity of solid resin, pressing time, and pressing temperature also decisively affect the liberation of formaldehyde during production and storage of particleboard. An increase in the quantitiy of solid resin leads to a relative decrease in formaldehyde liberation, i. e. doubling the resin quantity does not result in a doubling of formaldehyde liberation. The effect of moisture on the formaldehyde liberation is greater for small resin quantities than for large ones. The formaldehyde liberation increases linearly with pressing time at constant temperatures and pressing temperature at constant pressing time, respectively. Regarding urea formaldehyde resins with low molar ratios (1. 1,4 to 1,6), the curves of temperature and pressing time run approximately parallel; with increasing molar ratio the slope of the curves of temperature and pressing time steepens. In contrast, the subsequent formaldehyde liberation decreases with rising pressing temperature at constant pressing time and rising pressing time at constant temperature, respectively. Pressing spruce particles, the formaldehyde liberation is least, pressing oak particles it is highest.
