Mechanical suitability of fibre hardboars and particle boars used in the tropics

Summary

Storage and use of fibre hardboard and particle board in warm and moist tropical climate increases at first the moisture content. This increase in moisture content seems to be connected with certain irreversible changes in structure and bonding, as there is an elevated equilibrium moisture content after reconditioning in normal climate. Simultaneously modulus of elasticity and tensile strength decrease by approximately 24 to 45%, as has been shown by tests. Also the tensile strength perpendicular to the surface at particle boards, is reduced by 50% which reduction is, however, almost completely balanced after reconditioning.

Further investigations should now be carried out to study the changing rheological behaviour of fibre hardboard in warm and moist tropical climate so as to find new ways for the production of boards which are suitable for use in tropics.
