Summary
In the paper is dealt with the mutual effect of an external load and sorption on the deformation of wood. The authors carried out tests with thin specimens of pine (0,4 mm×5mm×150 mm). These were loaded in tension parallel to the grain, whereafter the air humidity was changed in cycles at constant temperature in one series between 70% and 25%, in another between 87% and 75%. With the first desorption, the “creep” defined as the difference in strain between loaded and matched, unloaded specimens, increased considerably. During the succeding absorption period, large part of this sorption-generated increase of strain recovered thus giving the resulting “creep” negative sign. However, when the equilibrium value of the moisture content was reached the strain increased again due to creep in the true rheological sense. The authors believe that these phenomena (as well as corresponding results reported by other) are due to certain deformations of the cellulose molecules caused by the external load (directly or indirectly as a memory effect) but made possible by the disturbance involved in sorption:
During sorption, H-bridges in the amorphous regions are repeatedly broken and rebuilt. The rebuilding may occur between the same OH-groups or one “bridge-head” may be replaced by another. Such a replacement means a displacement of part of the cellulose chain, but as long as there is no external stress the resulting deformation is zero. When stress is applied during this breaking and rebuilding of the H-bonds, with sorption the mutual displacements of the OH-groups will mainly occur in the direction of the applied stress. The recovery of “creep” during the absorption periods is explained as being due to a memory-effect, i. e. a result of internal stresses corresponding to the strains generated and frozen during a previous desorption period.
