Summary

To describe the perpendicular-to-grain rheological behaviour of red oak, creep tests were made at uniform increments of stress at 27°C and 65% relative humidity. Duration of tests was nominally 2400 hours. Creep strain was found to be linearly related to stress. Prony's fitting technique with a two-term compliance function describes the retarded elastic compliance quite well. Flow appears to be nonlinear with respect to time. Equilibrium compliance is about the same magnitude in tension and compression for the two elastic components, but the tensile value is half the compressive value for the inelastic component. Retarded compliance at equilibrium is one-half instantaneous compliance, while jlow compliance in compression at 650 hours equals equilibrium elastic compliance. Results of this study have some valuable implications in wood drying research. The study also contributes to a basic understanding of springback in particle board, the loosening of mechanical fastenings with time, and a variety of clamping problems.
