Abstract
In a 42-year-old and a 35-year-old forest stand five beech trees (Fa-gus sylvatica L.) were felled from October 1988 to October 1989 ev-ery 2 weeks. The trunk segments of 30 cm length each were cut out, at breast height, in the middle of the tree and at the crown bottom. From the outer sapwood prisms of approx. 12–13 cm3 were prepared for the estimation of water contents. In the dry growing season 1989 the lowest water contents (ml/dm3) and the lowest water-filling-de-grees (%) are found in spring and summer in the basal trunk parts. During a drought period the water depletion of storage water begins at the trunk base and steps gradually up along the stem height.
