Summary
The distribution of vascular bundles and cell types within the culms of bamboo was investigated for the speciesCephalostachyum pergracile Munro.Phyllostachys edulis Riv.Phyllostachys makinoi Hay.,Schizostachyum brachycladum Kurz,Teinostachyum dullooa Gamble, andThyrsostachys oliveri Gamble. 50–80% of the vascular bundles are located in the outer third of the wall, 10–25% in the middle, and only 10–20% in the inner third; significant differences exist between species and between the different parts of a culm. The total number of vascular bundles decreases steadily with the height of the culm, whereas their closeness increases at the same time. The relationship between number and eensity of vascular bundles is discussed. The culms of the bamboo species investigated consist of around 53% of parenchyma cells, 39% of fibers, and 8% of conducting cells (vessels and sieve tubes). The percentage distribution shows a definite pattern within the culm, both horizontally and vertically. Parenchyma and conducting cells are more frequently found in the inner third of the wall than in the outer third: (41–46% and 36–46% respectively) in the outer third the percentage of fibers is higher (44–52%) than in the inner (15–22%). The percentage of fibers and conducting cells in vertical direction increases with height, whereas the parenchyma content decreases. The distribution of cell types is related to the type of vascular bundle present.
