Summary
The effects of alcohols, formic, acetic, propionic and butyric acids, pyridine, glycerine and water on the compression along the grain, bending strength, and modulus of elasticity from bending, of four species of wood has been studied. In all the impregnations the various mechanical properties were proportional to the oven dry densities of the timbers.
The strengths of the impregnated woods were not always proportional to the swelling experienced by them, however from electrostatic considerations it was possible to find out a statistical relation between the mechanical properties of the timbers and the dielectric constant of the treating liquid, along with the volumetric swelling of the timbers. This relation was valid in most of the impregnations of the present study, and also when applied to the findings of some of the earlier anthors, gave a significant relation in the non-reacting typs of the impregnations.
