Summary
In scientific literature 200 termite-proof wood species are mentioned. Their durability is ascribed to the presence of extract components with detering or poisonous effect. Besides several wood extracts are known which proved to have a high efficacy on termites.
The aim of these investigations was to isolate further agents with a detering or poisonous effect upon termites from durable wood species and, if possible, to analyse their chemical composition and to elucidate the relation between wood resistance and type and content of the agents as well as their chemical structure and their biological efficacy. For this purpose 25 wood species, chosen on certain aspects, were analysed. About half of them proved to be highly resistant. The following species were found which were as yet unknown: Tabebuia ipé, Diospyros spez.=Macassar, Madhuca betis, Markhamia stipulata, Vitex spez., Vitex pachyphylla and Cassia fistula. According to paper- and cardboard chromatographic separation and testing of the individual fractions against Reticulitermes flavipes some compounds proved to be very effective. It was possible to crystalize some of them: Tectoquinone from Tectona grandis, Lapachonon from Paratecoma peroba, Tabebuia flavescens and Tabebuia ipé, Lapachol from Paratecoma peroba, Tabebuia flavescens, Tabebuia ipé, Stereospermum suaveolens and Tectona grandis, C11H8O(OCH3)2 substance from Diospyros spez.=Macassar and Pterostilbene from Pterocarpus Soyauxii. With a single exception all of the isolated agents as well as those already known fall to the chemical group of stilbenes, quinones and pyranderivates. It was possible to detect the presence of a methyl or oxymethyl group in 2-position of the anthraquinone nucleus to be the effective principle of the class of quinones. Several symptoms, as the importance of the methyl group at position 2 in quinones, the effectiveness of coumarines and the presence of vitamin K2 producing bacterias in the intestine of termites indicate the possibility of a mechanism involving vitamin K.
A comparison between the degree of wood resistance and the varying efficacy of the extracts, responsible for the termiticidal effect, shows a clear dependance, taking into consideration the varying quantity of extracts present in the individual wood species.
