Summary
The fatigue strength of wood exposed to dynamic tensile load parallel to grain was studied in solid beechwood. According to the test principles described in the first part of this paper, static relaxation was produced by a constant average strain ranging from 40 to 110% of the total elongation at failure obtained in a static tensile test. Dynamic relaxation processes were produced by pulsating strain oscillating about the constant average strain with an average frequency of about 35 cycles/sec and with amplitudes between 0 and 25% of the total elongation at failure of a static test. The results of the tests prove the following: Wood is in the “glassy state” until the beginning of rupture; the decrease in static modulus of relaxation is nearly of the same order when a pulsating strain is applied as in a static test with the same average strain for an equal time of testing; and wood shows in a good approximation a linear visco-elastic behaviour under dynamic load until the beginning of rupture. The beginning of rupture, which develops from a critical micro-notch, could be proved by elevated dissipation of energy, by a steep decrease in the slope of static and dynamic moduli of relaxation and by non-linearity of the visco-elastic behavior of wood. As expected, the higher the amplitudes of the oscillating strain, the earlier the rupture sets in and the tougher is the appearance of the rupture.
