Abstract
The extractive components of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and spruce (Picea abies Karst.) were isolated from wood partieles by sucessive extraction with solvents of increasing polarity. The yield of lipophilic extractives particularly from beech is very low. Polar extracts contain sugars, polysaccharides, and phenolic compounds, from which the latter might be responsible for the suspected mutagenic or cancerogenic activity of wood dust. However, preliminary mutagenicity tests (Ames tests) with acetone/water extracts were negative.
