Nach einem Hinweis auf den geringen gesamten Bewaldungsanteil in Australien (6,2%) und den großen Reichtum an Holzarten (über 1200) wurde die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Holzforschung seit 1917 geschildert. Die Division of Forest Products geht auf das Jahr 1926 zurück, konnte aber erst 10 Jahre später das neue Gebäude in South Melbourne beziehen. Die Division of Forest Products verfügt heute über 8 Abteilungen und beschäftigt im Durchschnitt 220 Personen. Ausstattung und Forschungs-tätigkeit der einzelnen Abteilungen 1. für Holz- und Faser-Struktur, 2. für Holzchemie, 3. für Holzphysik, 4. für Holzmechanik, 5. für Holztrocknung, 6. für Holzschutz, 7. für Sperrholz und Verleimung und 8. für Holzverwertung —werden ausführlich geschildert. Abschließend wird kurz über die sonstige Holzforschungstätigkeit in Australien berichtet.

The small total of areas under forest in Australia (6.2%) as well as the great riches in wood species (over 1200) are briefly mentioned, and the historic evolution of wood research since 1917 is described. The Division of Forest Products goes back to the year of 1926, but it was only 10 years later that it could move onto the new premises in South Melbourne. Today, the Division of Forest Products comprises 8 departments and, on the average, employs 220 persons. Equipment and research activity of the individual departments—1. for wood and fibre structure, 2. for wood chemistry, 3. for wood physics, 4. for wood mechanics, 5. for wood seasoning, 6. for wood preservation, 7. for plywood and gluing, and 8. for wood utilization—are described in detail.
