Summary
The lethal concentration of boric acid towards egg-larvae of Hylotrupes bajulus L. is 0.4 kg per m3 after 12 weeks, 0.3 kg per m3 wood after a 6 months test period. In the case of borax the respective values are 0.5…0.6 kg per m3 and 0.3…0.4 kg per m3 wood.
The efficacy of boron compounds against egg-larvae of Anobium punctatum De Geer, Hylotrupes bajulus L., the Cerambycid Ambeodontus tristis F., and Lyctus burnneus Steph. is compared with the toxic effect of other salts applied in wood preservation.
Boron compounds are effective only as stomach poisons and therefore slowly affect older larvae of the House Longhorn Beetle and the Common Furniture Beetle. They are suitable only for preventive protection of building and other timbers not exposed to the weather.
By the Kolle-flask method the following threshold values of boric acid towards wood-decaying fungi were obtained, expressed in kg per m3 wood: Merulius lacrymans 0.36…0.54; Coniophora cerebella 0.53…0.73; Lenzites trabea 0.52…0.72; Lentinus lepideus 0.54…1.4. These figures were compared with those of results so far known from the literature about boric acid and borax as well as fluor compounds.
Mold growth on pine sapwood blocks which were fully penetrated by boric acid and borax, was for most, prevented by 2.5%, but not by I% solutions.
