Summary

Examples of small-scale engineering geological maps have been reviewed to provide a background for the content of smallscale engineering geological maps. As a first step to preparing small-scale engineering geological maps of the United Kingdom, a classification of rock ~nd soil types, and combinations of types, relevant to the bedrock and superificial deposits has been adopted. The classification has been adapted from that proposed by the I.A.E.G. Mapping Commission. Maps are presented showing the relative geological complexity of the bedrock; the distribution of lithological types in the bedrock; the cover of glacial till obscuring bedrock; the distribution of superficial deposits; and the general distribution of coarse and fine engineering soils in both the superficial and bedrock deposits.
