Summary
The coastal plain of the Red Sea, South of Saudi Arabia is liable to be faced with an important short-term agricultural and port development.
The buildings of the capital of this région, Jizan, are currently being highly damaged by movements due to the presence of a deep salt dome.
Prospecting for sites favourable to the location of a new urban centre was undertaken over a region 100 km in diameter around the existing town.
The purpose of this paper is to show the interest of geotechnical mapping in the study of an urban development project. In an area which, at first sight, seemed to be rather homogeneous, a detailed analysis of the regional geological features made it possible to put into evidence contraints due to seismicity, the characteristics of foundation soils, the morphologic evolution of surface formations and the difficulties of water supply.
Several “maps of factors” have been plotted and synthesised in a unique document taking into account all the existing constraints. This general 1/60 000 map, defining the capacity of soils for town development, delimits favourable and unfavourable zones and proposes three possible sites for the new town. A detailed geotechnical study is currently being carried out on site no1, the one which was finally selected.
