Underground storage capacity of dams in karst regions, estimated through recession hydrographs

Abstract

The method developed by Mijatovic, based on recession hydrograph analysis, is applied to the case of the Oymapinar dam on the Manavgat river in the Mediterranean karst region of Turkey, to determine the aquifer parameters and to estimate the underground storage capacity. The recession hydrograph revealed a uniform aquifer discharge coefficient of 3.5 ‰ (−1/day), the estimate for the transmissivity is 9 m2/s, for the effective porosity 4%. Rough estimates for the underground storage showed that it might likely add a significant part to the surface storage capacity of 310×106m3. Furthermore, based on recession hydrographs, a mathematical model to estimate the dry season inflows to the reservoir has been developed and the opportunities for application during the first impoundment are discussed.

Résumé

La méthode développée par Mijatovic, basée sur l'analyse par la courbe de tarissement, est appliquée au cas du barrage Oymapinar sur la rivière Manavgat dans la région karstique meditérranéenne de la Turquie, pour déterminer les paramètres de l'aquifère et pour estimer la capacité d'accumulation souterraine. La courbe de tarissement a revélé un coefficient de décharge de l'aquifère de l'ordre de 3.4 ‰ (−1/jour), d'après lequel la transmissivité est calculée comme 9 m2/s et la porosité effective comme 4 %. Des estimations approximatives ont indiqué que l'accumulation souterraine pourrait ajouter une portion significante à l'accumulation superficielle qui est 310×106m3. Au delà de ces calculations, basée sur la courbe de tarissement, une modèle mathématique pour estimer les apports naturels au reservoir pendant la période d'étiage fut dévelopée et les possibilités d'application pendant le premier retenue d'eau sont discutées.
