Abstract

The use of marble in Architecture began on the 7th century B.C. and continued to be used without stop untill today. Greece and especially the East Macedonia region is an extremely privileged area on marble deposits both in quantities and qualities and colours. In the present work the main physical and engineering properties of some varieties of greek marbles are given and a comparison with the international standards is made. The experimental material (marbles) was from East Macedonia, Argolida-Arcadia and Magnessia, three of the biggest marble deposit areas in Greece. From the results obtained, it is concluded that the marbles examined satisfy all the international standard codes and thus they can be used as building stones and decoration materials.

Résumé

L'usage de marbres dans l'architecture a commencé dès le 7e siècle avant J.C. et continué, sans arrêt, jusqu'à nos jours. La Grèce, et spécialement la région de la Macédoine de l'Est est un pays extrêmement privilégié en ce qui concerne les gisements de marbre au point de vue quantité, qualité et couleur. Dans cet article les principales propriétés physiques et mécaniques de quelques variétés de marbres grecs ont été étudiées et une comparaison avec les données iternationales a été faite. Les marbres étudiés proviennent de la Macédoine de l'Est, des régions Argolida-Arkadia et de Magnessia qui sont trois des régions renfermant des gisements importants de marbre en Grèce. A travers les résultats obtenus, les marbres étudiés satisfont à tous les codes internationaux et par conséquent ils peuvet être utilisés comme pierres de construction et matériaux de décoration.
