A positive correlation between joint trends and drainage patterns (underground storage project, Israel)

Abstract

A positive correlation has been found between the measured joint pattern and the observed drainage pattern at a site selected for underground petroleum storage in central Israel. The accuracy of joint direction is one of the more important factors in determining the correct orientation of underground excavations. The positive correlation strongly indicates that drainage patterns can be useful in increasing the accuracy of measured joint directions in soil covered areas that are arid, of low relief, and structurally moderate.
