Summary

Stability analysis of a rock mass is an important and complicated problem related to the safety of engineering buildings. One of the major tasks of engineering geomechanics is to evaluate the rock mass stability both qualitatively and quantitatively. This paper deals with the basic idea that the stability of a rock mass is predominantly controlled by its structure. An approach to the regularities of rock mass deformation and failure on the basis of a better understanding of rock mass structure would lead us to make a reasonable evaluation on rock mass stability. The principal content of this paper may be summarized as follows.

  1. 1.

    The basis of stability analysis must be founded on the detailed study of rock mass structure.

  2. 2.

    The rock mass structure can be classified into four types, intact block, layered, fractured and loosened types, each of which may be subdivided into several subtypes.

  3. 3.

    Various types of rock mass structure differ from each other in their engineering behaviour. The permeability and mechanical properties of a rock mass reflect the characteristics of the structure modes.

  4. 4.

    The main features of deformation and failure are also different in various types of rock mass structure.

  5. 5.

    It should be emphasized that the main task of stability analysis is to decide the model of rock mass structure, to determine the mechanical parameters of them and to conduct stress-strain-time or load-displacement-time analysis for the determination of the stability coefficient and a comprehensive evaluation.

  2. 2.

    cette structure peut être classée en quatre types, bloc intact, lité, fracturé et décomprimé, chacun pouvant être subdivisé en plusieurs sous-types;

  3. 3.

    à chaque type de structure correspond un comportement géotechnique. La perméabilité et les propriétés mécaniques d'une masse rocheuse reflètent les caractéristiques des modes de structure;

  4. 4.

    les principales formes de déformation et de rupture sont aussi différentes pur chaque type de structure;

  5. 5.
