Glacial geology, a key to aggregate investigations in Canada

Abstract

Most aggregates mined in Canada are from glacial materials. Four examples are cited to demonstrate the role of glacial geology in aggregate investigations.

The first example illustrates how the results of a major engineering geology terrain study in northern Ontario are used to locate sand and gravel. The second and third examples show how stratigraphic interpretations helped in the location of buried aggregate in both western and eastern Canada. Finally, progressive study of a kame deposit located in southern Ontario has allowed delineation of the best aggregate resources within the landform.

Résumé

La plupart des granulats extraits au Canada viennent de matériaux glaciaires. Nous citons quatre exemples pour montrer le rôle de la géologie glaciaire dans les recherches de granulats.

Le premier exemple illustre l'utilisation des résultats d'une grande étude de géologie appliquée dans le nord de l'Ontario pour localiser sables et graviers. Dans les deuxième et troisième exemples, on montre l'utilité des interprétations stratigraphiques dans la localisation de gisements de granulats masqués dans l'ouest de l'est du Canada. Enfin, l'étude progressive d'un dépôt glaciaire de type “kame” dans le sud de l'Ontario a permis de délimiter les meilleurs ressources en granulats dans cette formation.
