Summary
The purpose of the HADES project of CEN/SCK at Mol (Belgium) is to study the possibility of geological disposal for conditioned radioactive wastes in the Boom clay formation, situated under the Mol-Dessel nuclear site.
An experimental laboratory is being constructed at a depth of 223 m in a clay layer. For this laboratory and the access shaft, the soil freezing method is being used.
First, the different steps and aspects of the site investigation are reviewed. Further is mentioned the good correlation existing at the upper part of the clay formation (transitional zone) between the different borehole logs and the geotechnical properties measured in the laboratory.
When trying to extrapolate these identifications towards the entire thickness of the clay layer, it appears that a subdivision of this formation into 5 groups, as previously established during other reconnaissance works in the Antwerp area, could be applied to the Mol site.
