Abstract
After a bibliographic survey of the geotechnical characteristics of volcanic tropical soils, the soils of Martinique (F.W.I.) are described according to their pedological classification. Then the results of an experimental survey are presented; these results show the specific behavior of materials containing allophane or halloysite.
The survey points out the change in their engineering index according to the way they are dried and prepared. Therefore the interpretation of geotechnical test—ie Proctor test—requires some knowledge of the mineralogy of the clay fraction of the materials tested. Another result of that survey is a better understanding of slope stability in this kind of materials.
