Conclusions

  1. 1.

Characteristic regions of triaxial, uniaxial, and compression-tension are formed as a function of the planform dimensions of the interchamber pillar and its height.

  2. 2.

Values of the limiting loads on the pillar depend on its dimensions and shape, the dimensions of the endogenic cracks, and their orientation, and are evaluated quantitatively by the above-cited equations.

  3. 3.

The possibility exists that the load sustained by the pillar can be controlled by creating artificial cracks-slits of a certain length and orientation-in the latter. The parameters of the controlling cracks are evaluated from equations cited in the paper.
