Summary
Turkish radiosonde data obtained at the meteorological stations in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir have further been analysed in order to study the steadiness of the upper winds for the seven pressure levels from 1000 hPa to 100 hPa between 1970 and 1984. The computed standard deviations (σu, σu) of the zonal and the meridional wind components were employed in order to furnish a measure of the total kinetic energy of the wind perturbations. The results revealed a marked seasonal difference. The winds in the troposphere over Turkey are found to be steady, in particular, in summer. This confirms the extent of the subtropical jet stream over Turkey in summer.
