Rectal irritating character of aqueous micro-enemas containing pure water or water in combination with either propylene glycol and alcohol or glycofurol and alcohol, was compared in a cross-over study in ten healthy volunteers. No significant difference in irritation score was observed between both compositions. In addition no essential discomfort was reported by the volunteers. It was concluded that the choice of a small volume is recommendable.
