Abstract
Rats and golden hamsters were exposed to cigarette smoke for a prolonged period of time. Mucus production was highly pronounced in the exposed animals. Multiple areas of mucociliary abnormalities were found in the tracheo-bronchial epithelium of these animals. The frequency of the ciliary beat and the velocity of the mucus transport were also altered after prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke.
