Summary

Small children who are suffering from a common cold and who have a stuffy nose have difficulties to breathe and, often do not drink nor eat. This is their real problem (and not the infection). A selfhelpmethod is described by which the mother gets actively involved in the care of her child. The problem such as it is experienced by the child and his mother is analysed and interpreted. The inferences are as follows: the mucosae can be humidified and the mucus can be liquefied through the application of saline drops and secretions can be removed by a sucker. The author shows how this method, adapted to local situations, can be used in various settings, both in the developing world and in industrialised countries.
