Life histories of three species of lanternfishes (Pisces: Myctophidae) from the eastern Gulf of Mexico

Abstract

Based on validated daily growth increments in sagittal otoliths, age and growth patterns were determined for three mesopelagic species of tropical-subtropical myctophids collected from September 1984 to May 1986 in the eastern Gulf of Mexico (27°N, 86°W). The life span ofBenthosema suborbitale (Gilbert) is less than 1 yr, and that ofLepidophanes guentheri (Goode and Bean) is annual, whileDiaphus dumerilii (Bleeker) attains a maximum age of about 2 yr. The mean larval periods were 40, 27, and 28 d, respectively. Maximum growth rates, which occurred in young juveniles, were calculated as 0.20 to 0.35 mm d−1, whereas minimum rates were 0.10 to 0.19 mm d−1. There were no significant differences in daily growth among collection periods or between sexes for any of the three species. Comparisons of growth and development of these myctophid species with ecologically and morphologically similar shallow-water counterparts, such as anchovies, indicate that myctophids grow and develop at similar rates. This suggests that the epipelagic zone, rather than the mesopelagic, shapes the life-history patterns of myctophids.
