Es ist das eine unmittelbare Folgerung aus dem Oszillationstheorem. Denn diesem gemäß besitzen die zu λ2j−1 und λ2j (bzw\(\tilde \lambda _{2j - 1} \) und\(\tilde \lambda _{2j} \)) gehörigen Eigenfunktionen genau 2j (bzw. 2j-1) Nullstellen im Intervall ≦t<2π(j=1,2,...), während zu λ0 keine Nullstellen (für 0≦t≦2π) gehören.
