Abstract
The radiation resistance of the high impact polystyrene Hostyren S 5300 of the Hoechst AG was investigated in two different experiments with gamma rays of a cobalt-60 source. Their radiation under exclosure of oxygen resulted in a steady increase of the ultimate tensile strength up to an energy dose of 3 MGy. During this experiment the elongation at break decreased (because of crosslinking of the polybutadiene phase) to half of its initial value at 1,9 MGy, the impact strength at 2,3 MGy, resp. A long time irradiation experiment of 10 years in air with low dose rate (3,72 mGy/s) resulted in considerable damage already at comparatively low doses: The ultimate tensile strength decreased to half of its initial value at about 0,9 MGy, the elongation at break at 0,4 MGy and the impact strength at 0,3 MGy resp. This behaviour is easily explained by radiation induced oxidation, especially of the rubber phase. — Storage of the sample for more than 14 years in the dark did not change their mechanical properties.
