Chapman's classification of shapes a proof using collapsing

Abstract

Certain contractible manifolds taken up to homeomorphism classify all possible shapes of metric compacta. The proof presented here is short and looks very different from Chapman's original one [2]. It suggests a way to study embeddings of shapes in finite dimensions beyond the trivial range.
