Abstract

The potential radiographic abnormalities in children with respiratory syncytial virus (R. S. virus) infection have been defined and the reliability of the definitions tested by a study of interobserver variation in their application. —The chest radiographs of 330 children with lower respiratory tract infections were interpreted independently by two radiologists. Inter-observer variation was least for the identification of consolidation or collapse (17%) and air-trapping (24%) and greatest for the identification (41%) and grading (51%) of peribronchial thickening. — The frequency of underreading and overreading of consolidation, coliapse and air trapping varied from 4 to 6%. Underreading (14%) and overreading (9%) of peribronchial thickening occurred more frequently and its is concluded that the definition of peribronchial thickening results in more variation of interpretation than consolidation, collapse or air-trapping.
