Abstract

Roentgenological features of craniostenosis have been reported from the literature and systematically recorded in the own material (173 skulls). 7 groups of craniostenosis have been differentiated according to the obliterated suture(s) and the corresponding deformities of the vault. The majority of the X-ray features are caused by the excessively chronic increased intracranial pressure; these symptoms are in some extent different from those in other diseases with raised intracranial pressure.

The 7 groups are: 1. Synostosis of the sagittal suture; 2 Synostosis of the frontal suture; 3. Synostosis of the coronal suture; 4. Synostosis of the coronal and sagittal suture; 5. hernicoronal synostosis (plagiocephalus); 6. Apert's syndrome and similar skulls without the malformations of the extremities; 7. Crouzon's syndrome combined with or without craniostenosis.
