Abstract
Idiopathic dilatation of the superior vena cava (IDSVC) refers to focal dilatation of this vessel without the associated abnormalities that produce increased systemic venous return or elevation of systemic venous pressure. The cause of this entity is unknown, but has been presumed to be an inherent weakness in the wall of the vessel. The lesion is usually demonstrated on routin chest radiograph as a right-sided, smoothly marginated, superior, mediastinal mass. Surgical intervention is discouraged. Appropriate diagnostic measures are proposed. Three new cases are summarized.
