Summary

The fragmentation under electron impact of Δ4 and Δ5 isomers of the cholestane, androstane, and pregnane series have been studied. It has been found that there are marked differences in the routes of decomposition of steroid systems containing double bonds in positions 4 and 5. This permits compounds to be assigned to the Δ4 or Δ5 series on the basis of mass-spectrometric data.
