Summary
If a gas-chromatograph is connected to a mass spectrometer, both the usable separating power of the column and the detection power of the mass spectrometric analysis depends, to a considerable extent, on the design of the link between the two instruments. Results of gas flow experiments performed with different links are given. These experiments had two aims: first, the enrichment of the component to be analysed in the carrier gas had to be maximized; second, effects due to adsorption, decomposition or dead volume had to be eliminated as far as possible. The results of headspace analyses of peppermint tea-employing packed columns and capillary columns-are reported.
