Infrared spectra of chalcone homologs containing a pyrrole nucleus

  • Published:
Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds Aims and scope

Abstract

The IR-spectra of 29 chalcone homologs containing a pyrrole nucleus were recorded in the solid phase, and in some cases in carbon tetrachloride solutions of varying concentrations. All the compounds studied formed intermolecular hydrogen bonds; and, when the carbonyl group was located close to the pyrrole ring (propenones-1), intramolecular hydrogen bonds were also formed. According to the distribution of substituents about the aliphatic double bond, all the ketones studied were trans-isomers; and, according to the relative distribution of carbonyl and vinyl groups, they had an s-cis-conformation. In the propenone-1 series there was a satisfactory correlation between v C=O and Hammett's σ-parameters. The corresponding frequencies were investigated.
