Abstract
The IR, UV, and NMR spectra of 3- and 5-pyrines, and of their thio, seleno, and imino analogs, are examined, and their pKa values measured. On the basis of the results, it is suggested that protonation in these systems takes place at the exocyclic heteroatom.
