Abstract
It is shown in the case of condensation of benzamidine with cinnamaldehyde and benzalacetophenone that the synthesis of pyrimidines from α,Β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds and amidines proceeds through a step involving the formation of hydroxytetrahydropyrimidines.
