Abstract

The lower selectivity of the methylation of 4-methyl-7,8-dihydroxycoumarin as compared with the methylation of 6,7-dihydroxycoumarins is explained by means of the pK a values and data from the PMR and IR spectra by the slight difference in the acidity of the hydroxyl groups in the 7- and 8-positions.
