Direct measurements of velocity profiles and fluxes at the cloacal siphon of the ascidian Ascidiella aspersa

Abstract

Actual measurements of velocity profiles were obtained with a conical hot-film probe at the cloacal siphon of the ascidian Ascidiella aspersa (Müller, 1776). The parabolic profile law, which was used to calculate pumping rates from a single velocity value, led to an underestimation of about 30 to 40% in comparison to actual flux measurements at the siphon. This margin could be reduced by a more accurate determination of the siphon size.
