The biology of Oikopleura dioica and Fritillaria borealis in the Southern Bight

Abstract

The biology of populations of Oikopleura dioica Fol and Fritillaria borealis Lohmann in the Southern Bight of the North Sea is deseribed on the basis of plankton collections made in 1962, 1963, and 1968. The distribution of appendicularians is related to the hydrography of the region, and it has been possible to follow the history of individual patches through several consecutive cruises. O. dioica, is characteristic of Channel water moving through the centre of the region, and F. borealis of continental coastal water. This pattern was well marked in 1968, but was obscured during 1962. The difference is attributed to unusual meteorological conditions during 1962. Smaller-scale distributional features which appear late in the history of a patch are possibly accounted for by predation. The ability to follow patches for several months has, in turn, permitted a description of the growth pattern of O. dioica to be made, and the generation times is calculated to be 144 days. In addition, the sexual development of both species is described, so that a fairly detailed picture of these populations emerges. Some of the features of the 1968 collections which have made this analysis possible are emphasized.
