The complete larval development of Porcellana sigsbeiana (Crustacea: Decapoda) under laboratory conditions

Abstract

The complete larval development from hatching through megalopal stage is described and illustrated for Porcellana sigsbeiana A. Milne Edwards, 1880. Development consists of a pre-zoeal stage of brief duration, two zoeal stages and a megalopal stage. The larvae and megalopa are compared with available descriptions of larvae from other species of Porcellana. Based on certain features present in all known Porcellana larvae, a tentative diagnosis is proposed, which may enable the larvae of western North Atlantic Ocean members of this genus to be recognized in the plankton.
