Cellulose degradation and carboxymethylcellulase production by Sporocytophaga myxococcoides grown in an air-lift fermenter

Summary

Sporocytophaga myxcoccoides was grown in a 31 air-lift fermenter using a medium containing 2% w/v insoluble cellulose. The cellulose content of the medium reduced the kLa of the fermenter but during growth the dissolved oxygen concentration did not fall below 75% saturation. Rates of cellulose degradation and extracellular enzyme production were similar to those reported for a stirred-tank fermenter.
