The high-energy industries of glass and ceramics in the light of emissions and energy reduction

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Institute of Mineral Engineering (GHI) of the RWTH Aachen University, Professor Rainer Telle and Professor Christian Roos welcomed guests from industry and research to the Summer Colloquium 2018 in Aachen on July 26, 2018, to speak and discuss the topic „The high-energy industries of glass and ceramics in the light of emissions and energy reduction“.

The lectures were started by Joaquín de Diego Rincón (Praxair Euroholding S. L.). Using a case study, he presented Optimelt, a regenerative thermo-chemical regenerator system (TCR system) developed by Praxair, which is currently used in a 100 tpd melting plant at Libbey’s Leerdam in the Netherlands. The TCR stores waste heat from the hot oxy-fuel gas in regenerator beds and uses this energy to reform a mixture of natural gas and recirculated flue gas to hot syngas, which is combusted together with oxygen in the furnace.
