In this study, the solid-state reaction between molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) and activated carbon was investigated in the temperature range 1123–1323 K. When the reaction temperature was above 1223 K and the C/MoO2 molar ratio was 2, molybdenum (Mo) powders of particle size about 0.4 μm were obtained. It was found that a higher temperature decreased the Mo particle size and increased the reaction rate. The present method provides a simple approach to prepare submicron Mo powders.
