On April 26th and 27th, 2018 more than 1100 leading engineers and scientists specialized in engine and drivetrain development from all over the world met at the 39th International Vienna Motor Symposium. This report contains the partly condensed summaries of the lectures of all the authors, as well as the speeches of the two organizers, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Bernhard Geringer, President of the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers (ÖVK), and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hans Peter Lenz, Honorary President of the Austrian Society of Automotive Engineers. Participants can download all the lectures of this year’s symposium and previous symposia from the website of the International Vienna Motor Symposium (vienna-motorsymposium.at).

Introduction

Prof. Lenz, Figure 1, started with an introduction to the topic: “Batteries and Internal Combustion Engines are Competing. Which one will win?”
