Holistic control concepts for tractors

The fuel consumption required for a given output represents a significant cost factor for a commercial powertrain. The increase of powertrain efficiency consequently not only reduces fuel consumption and therefore also CO2, but results in direct benefits for the end customer. Using a holistic approach for the control of the primary power source in these applications and the working equipment of such machinery promises significant benefits in terms of fuel consumption. At FEV, for tractors the application of an optimised operating strategy for the internal combustion engine and its subsystems such as air path management and exhaust gas aftertreatment were analysed in cooperation with the RWTH Aachen University. Subsequently, they were optimised with regard to the overall efficiency of the work machine, with particular regard to the use of mission-dependent data on the use of the work equipment.
