Braunschweig University of Technology | Death of Professor Matthies

Emeritus Professor Hans Jürgen Matthies died on 10 September 2016 in Braunschweig at the age of 94. After the war, he studied mechanical engineering and specialised in agricultural machinery, firstly in Berlin and then in Stuttgart until 1950. Subsequently, he spent a period as a research assistant and completed his doctorate under Professor Segler at Braunschweig University of Technology. In 1954, he joined the agricultural machinery company Gebr. Welger in Wolfenbüttel, where he was soon appointed Head Design Engineer. He moved to the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1958 and remained a full professor and Director of the Institute of Agricultural Machinery there until 1990. From 1978 to 1979, Professor Matthies was Vice-chancellor of the university and its first President.
