New Sensor Principle for NOx Measurement

Due to increasingly stricter emission limits the measurement of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) has become more challenging over the last few years. Based on these constraints six medium-sized enterprises and research institutions started the development of a new NOx sensor type for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) diesel engines. The concept is based on an electrochemical cell. Its simplified structure provides fast response while avoiding cross-sensitivities. This sensor principle allows a more efficient control of exhaust aftertreatment systems in order to fulfill more stringent emission standards.

Motivation

During the combustion process of fossil fuel Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are generated. In higher concentrations they have a negative influence on human health. The emission limits for NOx have been reduced continuously over the past years.
